La Avenida de Mayo, situada en el barrio porteño de Monserrat, es la columna vertebral del centro histórico y cívico. Sus diez cuadras de extensión, unen la Casa Rosada (sede del Poder Ejecutivo nacional) con el Congreso (asiento del Poder Legislativo nacional), y alberga en su recorrido a la histórica Plaza de Mayo.

En 1884, el Congreso decidió -por iniciativa del intendente Torcuato de Alvear- la apertura de esta avenida. En esa época, las elites porteñas soñaban una Buenos Aires parecida a París; y la Avenida de Mayo fue construida con un estilo art-noveau, como lo testimonia la ornamentación de los edificios. En una década, las diez cuadras involucradas en el proyecto se cubrieron de lujosos hoteles, confiterías y cafés.

Pero si la Avenida de Mayo fue francesa por su estilo, su espíritu es netamente español: la colectividad española se apropió de ella y pobló bares, restaurantes, hoteles y el tradicional Teatro Avenida, dedicado a la zarzuela. La Avenida de Mayo pasó a ser una réplica rioplatense de la Gran Vía madrileña y todavía puede sentirse el aire hispano en lo que queda de sus restaurantes y bares.

La Avenida fue, desde su inauguración, centro de la vida cultural de la Ciudad.

The Avenida de Mayo, located in the neighborhood of Monserrat, is the backbone of historical and civic center. Its ten blocks long, bind the Casa Rosada (seat of the National Executive) with Congress (seat of the national legislature), and hosts on their way to the historic Plaza de Mayo.

In 1884, Congress decided-initiative of Mayor Torcuato de Alvear opening this avenue. At that time, the Buenos Aires elites dreamed one Buenos Aires to Paris like; and Avenida de Mayo was built with an art-nouveau style, as witnessed by the ornamentation of buildings. Within a decade, the ten blocks involved in the project were covered with luxurious hotels, bars and cafés.

But if the Avenida de Mayo was French for its style, its spirit is distinctly Spanish: the Spanish community seized her and populated bars, restaurants, hotels and traditional Avenida Theatre, dedicated to the zarzuela. The Avenida de Mayo became a rioplatense replica of the Gran Via and can still feel the Hispanic air in the remainder of its restaurants and bars.

The Avenue was, since its opening, the center of cultural life of the city.
